NLBI’s initiative to “Provide events to encourage children and youth to make healthy choices so they become more like Jesus” was given a practical and compassionate opportunity two years ago. Chief Justice and NLBI Board Member John Cayce invited NLBI to consider offering Christ-centered programming for youth in the juvenile justice system. This need was brought to light through his conversations with Judge Alex Kim about the challenges faced by adjudicated youth in Tarrant County. After prayerful reflection, it became clear that this calling aligned beautifully with the heart of NLBI.
With the guidance of Tarrant County Juvenile Probation Services Director Riley Shaw and Deputy Assistant Director Bernice Mack and their dedicated staff, a team of 15 committed NLBI volunteers launched the inaugural NewLife RISING class on April 17, 2025, with more than 30 participating youth. Judge Alex Kim generously agreed that, upon completion, each student would receive 40 community service hours to help them meet the conditions of their probation. It has been deeply moving to witness members of the juvenile court community stand hand-in-hand with NLBI volunteers, demonstrating such remarkable love, patience, and compassion toward these young people.
Now two semesters later, the impact is unmistakable. More than 50 students have graduated from the program, many of whom have shared personal stories of hope and transformation. Even more inspiring, three young participants have chosen to be baptized as a direct result of the powerful affirmations of changed hearts and restored identity they encountered through NewLife RISING.
The 8-week program combines two in-person sessions (which include parents) with six virtual youth-only sessions. Each gathering is thoughtfully designed with biblically rooted teaching, testimonies from volunteers and guests, and meaningful small group conversations. The core objective is to help youth understand that they are created in the image of their Heavenly Father (Genesis 1:27) and that Jesus can break through any stronghold and offer a redeemed tomorrow. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside… A new life has begun!” (Living Bible).
Lives are being changed one student, one story, and one new beginning at a time.
